Children Hub at Breaker
Ethos
We take a holistic approach to children’s welfare and development, ensuring that they enjoy an amazing childhood surrounded by care, well-being, friendships and play. It is also our responsibility to prepare children for active participation in society and help lay the foundations for a fulfilled life.
Values
Democracy
Meeting every child’s need for care, security, belongingness and respect are important values that are reflected in our children’s hub. In addition, we promote democracy, diversity and mutual respect, equality, sustainability, good health and life skills:
By participating in the community, the children develop an understanding of society and the world in which they live. We work to promote this so that everyone can express themselves, be heard and participate.
Diversity & Mutual Respect
We want to show children that there are many ways to think, act and live. By offering shared experiences and showing the value of community, children also learn dignity by learning from each other.
Equality
We promote equality irrespective of gender, functional ability, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, ethnicity, culture, social status, language, religion and world view. We work to combat all forms of discrimination and promote compassion.
Sustainable futures
Teaching children to look after themselves, each other and nature is a very important role we play; by building more sustainable communities and giving opportunities for the children to care for and look after their surroundings and our natural environment we can provide ways to discover the diversity of the natural world.
Health & Life skills
Contributing to the children’s well-being, happiness and feeling of self-worth is so important. We grow their resilience by helping them cope with adversity, tackling challenges and exploring their feelings and those of others.
Physical activity is key and we promote movement, gross and fine motor development balanced with opportunities for quiet, rest and relaxation.
It is crucial to begin practicing healthy eating habits early on in a child’s life. As children grow and develop, they need important nutrients to be strong and healthy. We provide balanced meals and many opportunities to share and discuss eating and food together as a community. which fosters benefits including; stable energy, strong bones and teeth, improved mental health, makes us think clearly and be more alert, maintaining a healthy weight, preventing chronic diseases.
Curriculum / Environment / Activities
The overriding principle for our curriculum, environment and activities is consideration for the best interests of the children as individuals, ensuring that we work in partnership with each child’s family to meet their needs for care, play and to promote learning and development.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) sets statutory standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years old which all Ofsted-registered early years providers must follow. The seven (EYFS) Learning Areas include; Communication & Language, Physical, PSED, Maths, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts & Design which are provided holistically in all that we teach.
This is achieved through play-based learning inspiring curiosity by creating meaningful experiences. In our dialogue we challenge children’s thinking and invite them to take part in discovery, exploration and learning. Play-based learning is key for everything we do. We make space for a variety of play both outdoors and indoors and it is crucial that the children experience happiness, laughter and excitement.
Pedagogy
The Curiosity Approach® is inspired by a blend of Reggio Emilia, Montessori, Steiner, Te Whariki and Emmi Pickler, combining these great philosophies and pioneers to bring a modern day approach to Early Years education, aimed at igniting passion, awe and wonder back into play. Transforming traditional norms and moving beyond brightly coloured classrooms, through the use of loose parts, recycled materials and authentic resources. This play-based and child-led approach means children become the centre of their own development, encouraged to explore, experiment, and create, using engaging resources modelled by passionate facilitators. Their innate curiosity is awakened and sparked. The methodology is driven by active learning and critical thinking.
