MSc Genetics
Nic completed his undergraduate degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BSc) at the University of Stellenbosch in 2017. He was selected as one of fifteen applicants for the prestigious Genetics Honours program. Despite the challenging and grueling nature of the 2018 academic year, Nic persevered and excelled, achieving a 71% final grade on his research project investigating epigenetic changes in Nile crocodiles.
Following his Honours year, Nic pursued and successfully completed his MSc in Genetics at Stellenbosch University, marking his seventh year at the institution. His research, conducted in collaboration with scientists at Colorado State University, focused on the interactions between bacteria and aphid biotypes resistant to certain wheat cultivars, with a particular emphasis on epigenetic changes at the gene level. He presented his findings at the International Plant Resistance to Insects (IPRI) conference in Texcoco, Mexico.
Throughout his academic journey, Nic honed his skills in conducting experiments and researching relevant literature, particularly in the field of epigenetics. He is known for his excellent critical thinking abilities and scientific writing skills, creating a supportive and healthy environment for those around him.
